Explosion in Iranian Coal Mine Traps Fifty Miners in Iran

In what was believed to have been caused by a gas explosion, fifty miners were trapped in a coal mine in northern Iran. So far, two miners have died. Fears about gas in the tunnels have hampered rescue efforts. The mine is near Iran’s border with Turkmenistan.

The mine employs 500 people, but because the explosion occurred during a shift change, the damage was not worse than it was.
