According to reports from NBC News, Barack Obama personally advised Donald Trump not to hire Michael Flynn as his National Security Advisor. Flynn had worked for Obama, but was fired due to a difficult management style and repeated questioning of the President. However, Obama’s concerns with Flynn had less to do with his tenure in his administration than it did mounting evidence of a relationship with Russia.
Trump did not hire Flynn, but was forced to fire him shortly later when it became apparent that he had had communications with the Russian Ambassador to the United States about U.S. sanctions and then misled Vice President Pence about the content of those conversations.
Michael Flynn’s relationship with Russia is a long, entangled, and complicated one. He traveled to the country in 2014 to appear at an event hosted by Russian news agency RT and sat directly next to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Flynn was also paid for his appearance, which may have violated U.S. law.
The Senate and the House are conducting broad investigations into contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia.
