Riots erupted in a disproportionately immigrant town of Rinkeby yesterday, a northern suburb of Stockholm after police made an arrest. Riots previously broke out in the city twice before, in 2010 and 2013, but most think Sweden has done a better job of many European countries in assimilating refugee and immigrant populations.
The event came on the heels of a statement that United States President Donald Trump made regarding the terrorism and crime sweeping through the country due to its immigration policies. The statement sparked a strong rebuke from the country’s President who took to Twitter to ask Trump, “What have you been smoking?” Trump responded by citing a Fox News Report that had aired the night before, but whose conclusions were questioned by Swedes as well as the police officers that were interviewed by Fox News for the story.
Asylum applications to Sweden totaled about 30,000 last year, with half of that number coming from Syria.
